How to maintain a lawn

How do you maintain the perfect lawn?

In today’s age, more and more people are moving away from the natural lawn in favour of an easier to maintain, fake plastic lawn. Nothing wrong with some fake turf, but there’s something extra special about a perfect, well-maintained lawn.

Not everyone has the time or energy to keep their lawn looking good, so they’ll often find it drying out, getting overgrown or dying off completely. Not a good look.

So, how do you keep your lawn looking perfect, ready for a family BBQ or game of backyard cricket?

Step 1: Cut and weed

To get your lawn looking tip-top and growing well, you need to get it healthy. Remove any pesky weeds growing amongst your lawn, and give it a good, regular mow to keep it short. Weeds are inevitable, but as long as you remove as much as you can, your lawn will flourish.

Step 2: Water regularly

You need to know when and how to water your lawn effectively. Most gardening experts recommend watering your lawn during the morning, which allows the water to soak into the soil before the afternoon sun evaporates it. If you do it too late, the lack of light will stop photosynthesis from occurring and the lawn won’t be getting much use of the water you’re using.

Step 3: Fertilize

Using a good-quality fertilizer or plant feed will give your lawn the nutrients it really needs, letting it grow much healthier and stronger. A fertilized lawn will last much longer, absorb more water and sun, and be a lot more resistant to the elements. That and it’ll be greener – without having to climb the fence.

Step 4: Don’t forget to aerate!

Lawns need air as much as they need water. Keep your lawn aerated by using a garden fork or a similar tool to poke holes into the soil, keeping a decent space between each puncture. This helps your lawn breathe, as well as absorb water and nutrients much easier.
