Understanding the Uses and Types of Rakes

Different Types of Rakes Used in Gardening.

Whenever people think of the word rake, they immediately think of rakes made of plastic used for raking up leaves. While that is a commonly used type of rake, it is not the only one available. Rakes can be used for a number of different gardening needs. They are very versatile and come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. They are an incredibly useful tool to have for gardening whether you’re a backyard novice or a gardening guru.

Rakes can be used in the garden to do a number of different tasks such as;

  • Clean-up: Rakes are incredibly helpful for removing leaves, grass clippings, weeds, dead plants and stones from the garden. Different sized rakes can be used for covering large or narrow spaces.     
  • Scarifying your lawns: Rakes can help you remove moss build-up or thatch from your garden to make it look neater, improve lawn health and aerate the soil.          
  • Raking soil: Rakes are perfect for breaking up any clumps of soil, turning it over and removing stones or weeds. They are ideal for removing the unwanted material, plant and sow seeds and leveling soil.           
  • Leveling the soil: They are ideal for leveling the ground for laying turf /seeding grass, building sheds or laying paths.

The Different Kinds of Rakes

Different types of rakes are used for different purposes. These include:

  • Leaf: Are ideal for removing leaves and any other type of debris without disturbing the soil beneath.
  • Garden: Ideal for leveling the soil, spreading gravel and moving objects around in the garden.
  • Shrub: Are ideal for raking up leaves and debris and differ from leaf rakes in width. These are much narrower and fit into small spaces.
  • Hand: Ideal for doing heavy-duty work, moving soil and digging in smaller areas.
  • Thatch: Ideal for breaking off and taking out any thick thatch in your garden.
