What Plastering Tools do you need to do the job?

Plaster has been used since 7,500 BC in various forms - lime based, clay based and gypsum. It is one of the most ancient building techniques. In modern Australian building methods, plaster boards are used widely as interior walls creating the floorplan and a solid foundation and/ or canvas to decorate. Plasterers worth their salt can seamlessly connect Plaster Board to create walls - hiding joins to the naked eye. Even more impressive is decorative features such as Cornices, Ceiling Roses, Columns, Arches, Domes and Vaulted Ceilings to name a few.

Plastering methods have not changed for some time, however the tools used are continually refined to enable the current generation of craftsmen to ply their trade efficiently and effectively.

Here are a bunch of tools that Plasterers use on a daily basis. This is by no means an exhaustive list but merely to give you a taste:

Bucket Trowel:

A bucket trowel is a square-shaped tapered blade tool that is used to remove excess mortar from the borders of a bucket. It is also used for buttering bricks and leveling the mortar. They are available in a variety of blade sizes and thickness.

External Corner Trowel: it is used to plaster the corners and edges of a surface or a bucket.

Internal Corner Trowel: this type of trowel is used for feathering the uneven corner of the inner side. 

Float:

A Float is a flat and smooth piece of wood or any metal attached to a strong handle for making a firm grip while using it. A float is used to remove all the excess plaster from a wall and for making it even from every side. Floats come in a number of variations such as;

Support Prop:

A support prop is used to hold the plasterboard in its position without any other support during the process of attaching to the ceilings. It provides extra support in other work of construction as well.

Jointing or Taping Knife:

A jointing or taping knife is used on drywall it consists of a broad blade for applying joint compound "mud". This tool contains a handle for making it easy to use. It is available in a variety of blade sizes.

Plasterer’s Hawk:

A plasterer’s hawk is used to hold the excess plaster or mortar during the process of plastering. It helps in saving time as you don’t have to go and get the mixture every time. It is available in different sizes.

Small tool:

A small tool is a pointed long scale that is used for cementing during the brickwork. It consists of a trowel on one end and a square profile on the other end for making a strong grip while using. It is in transferring mortar and other types of mixtures that are used in construction.
